Oh, the Places You'll Go

I've been in one of those gaps for the past week. I completed a work, began querying it, and did not know what else to do with myself. So, I waited. I read the entire internet. I fussed with my website.

Then, yesterday I found out what's next! Well, what several things are next--and they are all firsts. Yummy, delicious, creativity-inducing firsts! My plate was woefully empty just a few days ago, but now my to-do list reads:

  • Write my first guest post
  • Write my first blogger award answers
  • Write my first SCREENPLAY

Yes, I am a crazy lady--that says screenplay! Do I know anything about writing for the screen? No. But I am learning at the speed of light. I've realized that every time I attempt something new, one of my firsts, I am so invigorated by the newness of it all that I gobble up information like a squirrel sucking down birdseed.

Perhaps the learning, and the growing, are what I love the most about writing. Have you had a first lately? Do you need a new one? I recommend diving in head-first, just don't get stuck like this unfortunate fellow.

  1. LOL--read the entire internet. I bet you could, too. I have to say that my most recent first was (drumroll) . . . getting on Twitter, where you were kind enough to introduce me. At first it was frantic, but also a lot of fun. And people have actually begun following me (the poor devils).

    Have fun w/your screenplay!

    1. Twitter is a huge first! It's like diving into a pool the size of the Atlantic Ocean--that's full of people!

  2. Your week sounds SO much like mine! Except for the screen play. What a great idea - curious how that goes for you. But they say a writer should be versatile. Good luck!

  3. I love new projects too! That's the great thing about writing- it allows us to keep learning and growing! Good luck to you on these new challenges. What will your screenplay be about? Thanks for stopping by my blog and sharing your thoughts about The Kitchen House and The Help. Since you read so much MG and YA, maybe you could do a guest post for me on one of your favorites, or several of your favorites. I'm always looking for books to recommend!

  4. I'm very much like that. I love learning about new things. I think it's amazing that we have so many resources to learn from now with the internet.

    1. I know. I was amazed that within ten minutes I had downloaded a screenplay template, found a database of original screenplays from film and TV available for immediate viewing, and read several how-to articles on the basics of screenwriting.

That is absolutely NOT to say that I mastered screenwriting in ten minutes! No, rather, I learned enough in ten minutes to see that writing for the screen is a very specific skill set. And while I am learning from and enjoying the opportunity to try it out, I fully expect the results to be as imperfect as my first novel :)

  5. I've always wanted to write a screenplay -- what inspired you to write one? And, did that poor squirrel get free???
