Short Story: A Peek Inside My Sketchbook

This is where the ideas live.
Some are ideas I borrow from others,
others are ideas for something new.
Sometimes I write to myself,
other times I plan a birthday cake.

People often say, so, you're a designer and a writer? How does that work? I think it's easier to just say that I'm a creator. What do I create? Whatever comes next. Here's to all the creators out there: may you fill another page today, wherever it may take you.

  1. So pretty! My notebooks look nothing like that. In fact, I don't have notebooks. I have random pieces of paper with hastily jotted notes about characters, plots, and new story ideas. But I am a very organized person, however, so my random pieces of paper end up filed in folders according to which story they eventually fit into.

    1. Thanks, Barbara :) I totally get you on the little scraps of paper! I have started using the notes feature on my phone when I'm out and about, but I prefer a good scrap of paper. As you can see, I "file" them by taping them in my sketchbook. It has color-coded sections. There's nothing like finding a little scrap of gold you squirreled away for yourself when you're searching for an answer.

  2. I identify with "creator" -- as opposed to "artist." Because one can create in so many ways -- from cooking to welding. Love your sketchbook and its contents and covet your writing space! (Mine is akin to a Jenga puzzle and looks out onto a graffiti'd alleyway.)

    1. Did you spot the edge of the train table poking into the photo of my writing space? To be fair, I should take a picture of the room when the kids have been at it. They call it the "toy room." I can only reclaim it periodically!

    2. Ah, will have to take a look. Yes, if I took a photo of part of my art studio, it would look cool ... until you saw my backyard through the sliding glass door.

  3. Did you ever make that cake? I'd be impressed :)
I've tried to keep a book with all notes and things, but when I need it, I can never find it.(Everything in this house is trickier than Houdini - but I'm pretty sure I can blame that on 4 pairs of sneaky-hands).

    1. I DID make that cake :) I make one crazy cake for each boy's birthday. This year: one R2D2, one stuffed bear!

  4. You certainly are a creator - that book is a work of art! How wonderful to be able to create such a treasure.

  5. Such a treat to be given a glimpse of your sketchbook, Melanie! It's beautiful from the inside out and outside in. And I bow down to you in awe over that cake--you're a braver soul than I am!

    1. Thanks so much :) The cakes are a labor of love. Just back from a vacation and I can't wait to get my hands on the sketchbook again!

  7. Thanks for the glimpse! I like the idea of thinking as a creator, and not just a writer or designer.
